Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack in your Hospital Bag
Preparing for the arrival of your little one can be overwhelming, but there are some things you can do to make the process smoother. One of these things is packing a hospital bag. It’s important to have everything you’ll need when it’s time to have your baby to help you feel more prepared and at ease. To help you get started, we’ve put together a helpful hospital bag checklist.
When Should You Pack Your Hospital Bag?
Experts recommend packing your hospital bag a few weeks ahead of your due date if possible. This will give you enough time to make sure you have everything you need and make any last-minute adjustments if necessary. Leave the Hospital Bag near the front door or in the trunk of your car. That way you just have to grab it or it’s already in your car.
What Should You Pack in Your Hospital Bag?
It’s important to keep in mind that the hospital will likely provide you with some essentials like disposable mesh underwear, a gown to wear during and after labor, and a few basic toiletries. However, you might prefer your own versions of these items or some extras, just in case.
Here are some essentials you should consider packing in your hospital bag:
Essentials
- A photo ID, insurance info, and hospital forms.
- Birth plan, if you have one.
- An outfit for your baby to wear on the way home
- Eyeglasses / contacts (and saline solution), if you wear them.
- Cell phone and charger, plus a portable power bank for backup.
- Warm, non-skid socks for walking around the hospital
- A warm robe or sweater that you don’t mind sacrificing.
- Headband or ponytail holder to keep your hair out of your face.
- Two maternity bras without underwire, plus nursing pads for support and leak protection.
- Comfortable going-home clothes in six-month maternity sizes and flat shoes.
- A compact bag to carry any additional hospital supplies and potential gifts.
- Infant Car Seat with newborn insert. Probably doesn’t fit into your Hospital Bag but you need to bring it otherwise they don’t let you leave the hospital in some states!
Items for Mom
- Extra-absorbent maxi pads (you want to use your favorite brand instead of the hospital provided ones)
- Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, soap, shower gel, makeup and any other items that will make you feel rejuvenated
- Massage oils or lotion for labor (for massages in labor)
- Toiletries such as lotion and lip balm, but refrain from bringing deodorant as it’s recommended for the baby to smell your natural scent.
- Your personal brush and comb.
- Your own toothbrush, toothpaste and mouthwash (don’t forget to charge your electric toothbrush)
- Headphones (to listen to our Labor Playlist)
- Bath Towel (the Hospital provides a very thin one, better have your own)
- Maternity underwear that can be ruined. Choose the c-section recovery underwear in case you have a c-section.
Items for the partner
- Cell Phone and Charger
- Toiletries (Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, spare contact lenses, glasses, …)
- Pillow and blanket (Making the hospital couch you’ll sleep on more comfortable)
- Jacket for runs to the store (because you will forget something)
- Change of clothes because you never know how long labor will take
- Pajamas / sweatpants for sleeping more comfortable even though you probably don’t get much sleep in
- Cash for the vending machine in the hospital, because the cafeteria is probably closed at 3am when you need snacks the most.
- Snacks. Choose snacks that don’t go bad, like pretzels, trail mix or granola bars.
- Camera. In case you want to up your photography game bring a camera for the first moments with your baby
What not to pack in your hospital bag
While you may be tempted to pack everything under the sun, it’s essential to remember that you don’t want to overpack or bring unnecessary items with you. In this article, we’ll take a look at what not to pack in your hospital bag.
Too many diapers and wipes
While it may seem like a good idea to bring diapers and wipes with you, the hospital will provide everything you need during your stay. They will have diapers and wipes readily available, so save your space for other essentials. Bring maximum 1 – 2 diapers for the way home in case of an emergency.
Too many clothes
It’s important to pack comfortable clothes for your stay, but it’s also essential to keep in mind that you’ll be changing into a hospital gown for labor and delivery. A few outfits for going home and a couple of comfortable loungewear options for your stay will suffice. Avoid overpacking clothes and stick to the essentials.
Candles or Fragrances
While it’s understandable you want to create a relaxing atmosphere during labor, candles or other fragrances are not permitted in the hospital. The hospital environment is a sensitive one, and strong smells can be overwhelming to other patients and staff and also confuses the newborn.
Jewelry or Valuables
It’s best to leave your jewelry and other valuables at home during your hospital stay. Hospitals can be busy places, and it’s easy for items to get misplaced or lost. Keeping your valuables at home will give you peace of mind and one less thing to worry about during your stay.
